Introduction to Phuket: All You Need to Know
Phuket is a well-known tropical island destination of Thailand. Located in the crystal clear waters of the Andaman Sea, this island is known for its diverse nature, combining stunning limestone cliffs, amazing white sandy beaches, rich history of the island’s trade, and lively resort life. Even though international tourists immediately head for its world-famous west coast beach resorts, the island represents an independent rich province with its distinct culture, unlike the mainland part of Thailand.
1. The Origin of the Name & Cultural Identity
- Etymology: The origin of the name Phuket is the old Malay word Bukit, which means “Hill” or “Mountain,” referring directly to the rugged and mountainous appearance of the island. Historically, the island was named Junk Ceylon on the maps of old European sailors, while its ancient name was Cape Salang.
- Provincial Motto: “Mook Andaman, Thalang Chan Mook, Thao Thep Kasattri Thao Sri Sunthon, Boon Ruang Mueang Ra-nong” (Translates into “Pearl of the Andaman, historic Thalang town, land of the heroic heroines Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon.”)
2. Strategic Location & Geography
The province occupies an area of approximately 543 sq. km (exclusive of 39 smaller satellite islands) that is linked to the mainland part of Phang Nga province through the historic Sarasin Bridge.
- Terrain: The province boasts extremely dramatic and varied terrain. Around 70% of the area is covered by a north-south mountain range, whereas the rest 30% consists of a central plain suitable for agriculture. The western coastline borders on the vast expanses of the open Andaman Sea, presenting beautiful sandy crescent-shaped bays, whereas the eastern coastline is graced with tranquil mangrove forests and mudflats.
- Adjacent Areas: Located entirely within the Andaman Sea, Phuket Province borders on Phang Nga Province directly to the north, and faces Krabi Province across the vast Phang Nga Bay to the east.
| Category | Detail/Logistics |
| Province | Phuket Province |
| Location | Nested in the waters of Andaman Sea on the southwestern shores of Thailand. |
| Population | Officially: Approx. 420,000 people | Actually Estimated: More than 600,000 people (owing to the large number of hospitality workers in domestic sector, foreign residents, digital nomads, and villa residents). |
| Getting There: By Car/Taxi | Connected to the mainland by Sarasin Bridge, accessible in about 12-14 hours’ drive from Bangkok. |
| Getting There: By Bus | Takes about 12 hours from Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and drops you at Phuket Bus Terminal 2. |
| Getting There: From Airport | Phuket International Airport (HKT) lies at the very north of the island. It is the second-busiest air traffic airport in Thailand and offers non-stop services to Europe, Australia, Middle East, and Asia. |
3. A Glimpse at the Past
Phuket’s prosperity was established through trade well before tourism:
- Tin Mining Boom (from 16th to 20th Century): Phuket was an important maritime trading place owing to a huge worldwide need for tin. The profitable tin mining boom attracted thousands of Chinese merchants and European traders contributing to the island’s demographic uniqueness.
- Heroines of Thalang (1785): During the invasion of Phuket by Burmese troops, two sisters (Chan and Mook – wives of dead governors) mobilized people on the island. Disguising the women of Phuket in men’s uniforms and convincing Burmese that the garrison is enormous, they managed to defeat the month-long siege and were granted royal titles of Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon.
- Chinese/Portuguese Mix: The great wealth of the tin mining boom financed the construction of Old Phuket Town creating a specific architecture combining the Chinese and Portuguese colonial styles.
Top Places to See
Phuket offers a variety of breathtaking natural attractions, islands, and historical sites. Here are the best of them to visit:
Phi Phi Islands & Phang Nga Bay
Phuket Island is the perfect starting point for discovering some of the most amazing marine parks in the world. Phang Nga Bay lies to the east, known for its green water and vertical limestone karst islands emerging out of the ocean (such as James Bond Island). To the southeast are the Phi Phi Islands, a pure paradise of stunning white sand beaches, fantastic snorkeling spots, and massive sea cliffs.

Maya Bay (Phi Phi Leh)
Being located in the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, Maya Bay is among the most famous and beautiful tropical locations on earth. It became famous around the globe thanks to the movie released in 2000 called The Beach, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, where it has an amazing white-sand beach surrounded by the 100-meter high cliffs made from limestone rocks from all directions. In order to maintain its coral reefs and marine eco-system, the Thai authorities implemented a set of conservation measures, which includes temporary closings, regulated walkway access, and a prohibition of swimming at the shore for the recovery of reef sharks and other wildlife.
Accommodation & Hotels: Staying overnight is not allowed on Phi Phi Leh because of the fragility of its eco-system. Travelers will have to spend their nights in Phi Phi Don or make day trips there.

The famous Khao Phing Kan got worldwide recognition after its appearance as a secret hideaway of Francisco Scaramanga, the villain of the 1974 James Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. The unique attraction of this island is the vertical karst limestone needle Koh Ta Pu that is 20 meters high, tapering very sharply from a wide top down to a thin bottom situated in the sea. Tourists on day-trips often visit the green marine channels of the island using longtail boats to purchase souvenirs, mostly handcrafted seashells from the local merchants located along the beach caves.

The entire neighborhood is full of brightly painted Chinese-Portuguese style shop houses, colonial mansions, boutiques, and handicraft stores.
Wat Chalong & The Big Buddha (Wat Phra Phutthamingmongkhol)
The impressive 45 meters high seated Buddha statue, situated on top of the Nakkerd Hills, near Chalong, is completely covered with immaculate white Burmese marble pieces which sparkle brilliantly under the tropical sun. From this elevated position, you can enjoy stunning 360-degree panorama over Chalong Bay and Kata Beach.
