Nana Plaza

Its full name is Nana Entertainment Plaza and it was first opened in the late 1970s as a small two-storey shopping and dining mall. Its namesake is the influential Nana family with businessman Lek Nana having a notable role in it. The shift in focus of the Nana Plaza has happened gradually. From boutique stores to a growing number of beer bars and go-go clubs as the nearby hotels grew rapidly in the early and mid-1980s.

Nana Plaza has become a big U-shaped building that has three storeys and an outdoor patio. As for 2012, it was taken over by commercial firms like the Panthera Group which made huge investments in infrastructure of the complex, including escalators, new security systems and, finally, the building of a famous all-weather canopy roof. At present it calls itself the “World’s Largest Adult Playground.”

How to Reach Nana Plaza

With its location just off Sukhumvit Soi 4, Nana Plaza is blessed with excellent centrality, allowing it to be easily accessible through public transport without being caught in the evening congestion of Bangkok.

  • By BTS Skytrain: Take the Sukhumvit Line and get off at Nana Station (E4). Exit from Exit 3 and walk back west along Sukhumvit Road for about 300 meters until you arrive at Sukhumvit Soi 4 on your left. Walk down the soi for 3 minutes and the neon entrance of the plaza will be on your left.
  • By MRT Subway: Get off at the Sukhumvit MRT Station, cross over to the adjacent Asok BTS interchange, and take one short Skytrain ride to Nana Station, or walk down Sukhumvit Road (10 to 12 minutes).
  • By Taxi or Ride-Hailing (Grab/Bolt): Specify your destination as “Nana Plaza, Sukhumvit Soi 4”. Remember that traffic traveling down Sukhumvit Road in the evening peak hour (8:00 PM to 11:00 PM) may face considerable delays, thus, it is best to use the BTS Skytrain.

Atmosphere, Layout, and Nightlife Vibe

Unlike the linear nature of Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza is a densely packed U-shaped commercial building complex across three different floors with an open-air courtyard at its center.

  • Ground Floor: Consists of open-air beer bars, comfortable lounging areas, and a vibrant social setting where one can sit back, drink, and watch the continuous flow of international crowds through the main courtyard area.
  • Upper Floors (Level 2 & 3): Consist of the majority of the high-octane indoor go-go bars present in the complex. The setting changes entirely in the upper floors as they have dimly lit rooms with neon lights and dancing stages.

2. Rainbow Nana (Rainbow 1 & 2)

The Rainbow venues (namely Rainbow 1 and Rainbow 2), being real historical landmarks of the district, have been serving customers non-stop at Nana Plaza since its early days of development. What is nice about them is that the Rainbow bars provide you with pure Bangkok-style go-go without complicated modern elements of design. The design inside the venue presupposes traditional tiered seats facing the illuminated center stage with dancers performing regular dances. The Rainbow venues are renowned for being very cozy places, where the service is friendly and the staff is easily accessible.

3. Cascade Bar

As one of the most strategically positioned venues in this complex, Cascade Bar is greatly revered for its unique setup and ambiance. One of the major things that distinguish Cascade is its open front design that allows the activities taking place in the room’s stage to blend seamlessly with the active flow of people in the plaza outside, which makes the venue a great place for observers to watch without having to get involved in too much action immediately. Cascade boasts of dance shows, pleasant hostesses, and regular patrons. Its perfect location makes it an ideal hangout point for friends planning on spending some time within the complex.

The complex features about 30 to 40 active venues which entertain guests with entertainment, mostly go-go clubs, mega clubs, and outdoor areas that are crammed within the three floors of the complex.

Drinks and Entry Fees

  • Entry Fees: Free of charge. No cover charge or entry fee is necessary to enter the Nana Plaza building and explore its floors.
  • Standard Drinks: The local bottled beer brands (Chang, Singha, Heineken) go for 150 to 200 THB, and the standard cocktails or mixed drinks are priced at 200 to 300 THB.
  • Lady Drinks: Purchase of a drink for the performer or lady sitting with you usually costs about 180 to 260 THB (non-alcoholic drinks or house cocktails).

Working Girls and Cost Guidelines

  • Bar Fine: In case you need to leave the venue along with the staff member outside of working hours, you will have to pay the place a bar fine which may vary anywhere between 600 to 1,000 THB+ depending on the time of day and exclusivity of the venue.
  • Compensation: In case of private arrangements or normal cash payment that is negotiated individually between you and the girls, it should be between 6,000 to 8,000 THB.

Is Nana Plaza Good for Solo Travelers and Couples?

  • Couples: Nana Plaza is really a surprising, exciting, and distinctive cultural experience for any adventure-seeking couple who wants to see one of the most distinctive aspects of Bangkok firsthand. The walk through the open-air ground courtyard, enjoying the view, and having a drink while watching the people is an interesting thing to do on a date night, but it needs good communication between partners. The atmosphere there is completely adult-oriented.
  • Solo travelers: It is easy to get around here alone just because of curiosity, but it needs more awareness of the situation. Single men attract attention from the staff and promoters of the venue, while single female visitors do not need to worry about anything.

Safety, Scams, and Essential Alerts

How Safe Is It?

In terms of physical safety, Nana Plaza is relatively safe. The premises are well-guarded by private security guards and since it acts as a major tourist destination, instances of violent crime are very uncommon. People go there to have fun and drink. The main risks come from overconsumption of alcohol, crowded places, and petty thefts.

Common Scams & Alerts to Keep in Mind

  • Padded or Inflated Bills: The most common complaint made within some go-go bars is the unexpected charges that show up on your final bill. Dishonest establishments have been known to charge extra “lady drinks” or fake tips for staff members who did not serve you.
  • Pro-Tip: Always pay your tab after each round of drinks, instead of building up a tab throughout the night. In case of an incorrect bill, stay calm, and argue your case calmly before paying.
  • The “Two-Drink Minimum” Hustle: Certain bars insist on a minimum order of drinks, which can quickly add up in cost if the drinks are ordered and consumed quickly. It is always best to know what their pricing policy is before sitting down.
  • No Photography Allowed: Taking photos or videos in the go-go bars or in the surrounding plazas is strictly forbidden. This could lead to an aggressive confrontation from security or staff members.
  • Street Scamming: Watch out for people hanging around the perimeter of Sukhumvit Soi 4 trying to sell “special shows” or expensive tuk-tuk rides. Stick to official transport and services only.
