Maya Bay

Welcome to the complete guide on how you can make your trip to Maya Bay an amazing experience! The location of Maya Bay is at Phi Phi Leh (which happens to be the smaller of the two islands known as Phi Phi Islands) in Thailand. It is an amazing bay encircled by some tall limestone cliffs with a beautiful color combination of bright green and turquoise. This stunning natural marvel is home to a beach that measures about 250 meters.

🎬 Why Is Maya Bay So Popular?

Maya Bay became a sensation back in 2000, when it was used for shooting one of the famous Hollywood movies, The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The beach was represented in the movie as a pristine hidden oasis, causing a tourist rush at once.

During many years, the enormous number of tourists, who reached numbers of up to 5,000 a day, severely affected the local marine ecosystem and coral reefs. As a result, the Thai government decided to close the bay for almost four years to restore the ecosystem. Now, Maya Bay is managed by tough regulations.

All-Inclusive Speedboat / Speed Catamaran Day Tour (Most Popular):

  • Duration: About 50 to 60 minutes directly from Phuket (departing usually from Rassada Pier).

    • Duration: About 1.5 to 2 hours by large passenger ferry from Phuket’s Rassada Pier to Phi Phi Don Island (Tonsai Pier).

🌊 Vibe and Atmosphere

The vibe of Maya Bay completely depends on your time of arrival:

  • Early Morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM): Peaceful, magical, and tranquil. The water has a glass-like appearance, the karst cliffs have dramatic morning shadows, and you can enjoy the beauty of a pristine paradise.
  • Mid-day (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM): Active, busy, and lively. Hundreds of tourists crowd the boardwalks at specific times.
  • Important Note on Crucial Rule: Swimming is strictly prohibited in the main turquoise waters of Maya Bay for the sake of conservation of the reef sharks and corals coming back. You can only swim/snorkel in the outer areas such as Loh Samah Bay and Pileh Lagoon.
